Birmingham Citadel Band gave their annual “pre-contest” concert at the Symphony Hall to the keen brass band enthusiasts gathered for the 2009 “British Open”.

As usual, it proved to be an exciting, if not daunting, opportunity to provide pre-contest entertainment, along with music which reminded the listener of the Salvation Army Band’s real mission.

The unusually early start of 8.45am was certainly a challenge in itself, but BCB, undeterred by the “close inspection” of the enthusiastic audience of band connoisseurs, gave a varied and interesting programme that set the scene for a busy day of music-making. Friendships were renewed and  many complimentary comments were received about the band’s playing and “witness” on such a prestigious occasion.
